MCSA / MCSE Windows 2003 - Requirements
On Feb 17th 2003, Microsoft announced their MCSE / MCSA 2003 requirements as well as an upgrade path for Windows 2000 MCSA's and MCSE's.
Key Points :
  • Exams available during sometime after June 2003
  • Upgrade exams available for 2000 MCSA/MCSE
  • MCSA requires 1 exam
  • MCSE requires 2 exams (only 1 in addition to MCSA upgrade)
  • Must be fully certified on 2000 track before upgrades.
  • Recommendation - Complete 2000 track and then take the upgrade exam(s). The Windows 2000 server will be with us for many more years before the 3k starts taking over.
Questions and Answers
Question - I have MCSA 2000, I will take the 70-292 to upgrade to MCSA 2003. Do the MCSA 2000 exams count towards the MCSE 2003 Track ? i.e. 70-215, 70-216 etc...
Answer - Yes, if you have completed the MCSA 2000 route, used the upgrade exam 70-292, then effectively exams taken under the MCSA 2000 route will count towards the 2003 route. i.e. You will not have to take the like exams under MCSE 2003. The only proviso is that as with the 2000 Track, if you have used A+/N+ as electives then you will similarly need to take an elective exam under MCSE 2003. As you would have had to do were you taking the MCSE 2000.
Question - As with the 70-240 - Do the upgrade exams have an expiry date by which they can be taken ?
Answer - No, The neither of the upgrade exams have an expiry date.
Question - I have MCSA 2000 using the A+ / N+, am I requires to pass more than just the Windows 70-292 ?
Answer - No, You only need to pass the 70-292.

CONCLUSION - The 70-292 - Is a relatively painless way to upgrade existing MCSA's to the new 2003 requirements, which hopefully will not require a further upgrade for a at least 3 years ! .
