CompTIA Linux+ XK0-002

Linux+ was developed by CompTIA to serve as a reliable gauge for both IT professionals and employers of an individual's knowledge of Linux operating system.

The certification tests proficiency in foundation-level Linux operating system knowledge. Linux+ is designed as a stepping-stone to the higher-level certification tracks from Sair and LPI. Candidates for the Linux+ certification should have six months of experience of working with the Linux operating system.

The certification prepares students for job roles such as entry-level help desk, technical sales, entry-level service technician, technical writer or application developer.

Accumulative Ratings - Note all data presented here assumes students are following the certz route, where each certification builds on the previous certifications achieved. See FAQ for explanation of each rating.

STUDYING - Having completed the A+, Network+ and the MCSE route, the Linux+ fills in the remaining gap in your knowledge base. The good point is that especially the A+ and network+ will help make this a relatively easy learning experience / exam.

Linux+ will test your knowledge in a variety of areas: networking, filesystems, file permissions and ownership, user administration and, to a lesser degree, installation and configuration.

Knowing how to network a Linux machine is essential, so be familiar with commands such as ifconfig, netconfig, and linuxconf. You'll also need basic TCP/IP knowledge, such as gateways; DHCP; ping, traceroute and netstat commands; and, yes, subnetting. If any of these aren't on your list of proficiencies yet, be sure to add them.

Certz.com recommends the SybexLinux+ Study Guide, 3rd Edition (XKO-002) at $32 (37% off) by Roderick W. Smith . The book comprises 558 pages with a CD-ROM. If you are new to Linux then this book will ease you into it. This book and the practice question's on the CD-ROM are all you need to pass the exam and on the first try. It is clear and follows the Linux exam objectives very closely. There's not much more to add !

Linux+ Study Guide, 3rd Edition (XKO-002)

EXAMS - The Linux+ exam comprises 94 questions, with a time limit of 120 minutes, and generally takes about 45 mins to complete. The passing score is 655 69% with the score range being from 100 to 900. You are allowed to review (go back) to previous questions before ending the exam. Basically you have plenty of time to pass this relatively easy exam.

CONCLUSION - An important missing piece of the Network Administration requirements. So do I progress along the Linux route or look at more in demand certifications ? Well it all boils down to what your job is. If you deploy / manage or are intending to .... Linux based Network systems, then you should consider embarking on furthering your knowledge of Linux by taking a look at the three main certifications that continue on from Linux+ namely Red Hat Certified Engineer Program, SAIR Linux & GNU Certification and the Linux Professional Institute certification (LPI)

Personally at this stage we attach greater importance to other routes than continuing along the Linux route, which may change as Linux continues to grow in popularity.
